What's wrong with Mongo?

I'm seeing tonnes of posts on Reddit about how we should poke mongo. There's even a new sub for it. I tried googling 'why people poke mongo' but all I get is some news about some new Nintendo game.
Can someone explain this Mongo guy to me?
